Whistling, howling, snapping, scratching sounds emitted from the mouth of the dark fireplace. I sat fascinated, listening and watching, lest something come out. Unaccustomed to chimneys and fireplaces, I wondered. The sounds seemed to circulate around from within the chimney, then burp or wheeze out into the room. Why not take a look outside? Yes. The chimney sounds had simply signaled change in the weather.
